Quote of the Day from Teaching Truly

Quotes from Teaching Truly: A Curriculum to Indigenize Mainstream Education by Four Arrows (Don Trent Jacobs)

“While there is no single Correct way for educators to address the complexities of historical trauma and unresolved grief among Native students and their communities, this chapter offers the following for consideration:

1. Acquire at least a basic understanding of the experience of Indigenous people in the United States. If one is interacting with a specific tribe or tribes, become familiar with specific tribal history and events. With over 560 federally recognised tribes in the United States, there is no generic “Native American.” Indian identity exists on a continuum ranging from traditional to highly assimilated. Native beliefs and spirituality exist in modern day life as tribal cultures, traditions and languages, and they are incorporated into the ways that American Indians and tribes govern and manage their affairs.” ~ Teaching Truly Pg 46
