Announcement of Grants from the Healing Foundation

Heal our Past, Build our Future
Together Celebrating the Apology to the Stolen Generations 2014

As we approach the 6th anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations on 13 February 2014 the Healing Foundation is happy to announce the recipients of our Apology micro grants. These micro grants of up to $700 contribute to community celebrations around Australia.

Eighty six communities will hold their own events in what will form a national web of Apology celebrations. The focus of these events is to highlight the importance of the Stolen Generations and this year’s celebration focuses on uniting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians, young and old under the theme Heal our past, build our future together.

Under the theme of togetherness a variety of activities will take place across every state and territory ranging from community arts events, screenings of Kevin Rudd’s Apology speech, good old fashioned barbecues, bush tucker cooking, special dinners for Stolen Generations members, photography and essay writing competitions, and gatherings where members of the Stolen Generations share their life stories and healing journeys.

Here is a snapshot of just some of these events:
Noonga Reconciliation Group in Wavell Heights (QLD) will organise a ‘Growing with Elders’ activity to build stronger relationships between Elders and school students. Firstly the students will visit the Elders to hear about their life experiences. Then, on the anniversary, the students and elders will plant a number of native trees and plants in the Elders’ Garden. The vision is for relationships to grow as the two groups learn to care for the garden together.

Indigenous Job Connections in Cairns (QLD) will hold a day out at Bilwon Farm in Mareeba for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous participants. There will be kup-murri cooking, rainforest basketry weaving, boomerang throwing and traditional Aboriginal games. The day will culminate in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony on the riverbank.

The Gawler Health Service (Kalteeya Aboriginal health team) in SA will hold a celebration of the life of Mary ‘Mullamer’ Graham who was a leader of healing for the Stolen Generations in the regions and passed away this year. A memorial garden and plaque will be unveiled in her honour. There will be a traditional Kaurna dance performance, a Nunga luncheon and an Aboriginal health clinic.

At Kintore/Walungurru (NT), Waltja Tjutangku Palyapayi will hold a commemorative flag raising event to honour the Pintubi people who walked back to their own country (after being forcibly removed decades earlier) in the early 1980s and founded the most remote community in the western desert.

The Melbourne Indigenous Church Fellowship in Maribyrnong, Melbourne, will organise a Story Circle to invite non-Indigenous people to hear the personal experiences of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The traditional liberation song, Bura Fera, will be sung in the Yorta Yorta language.

Edmund Rice Education Australia in Alice Springs will hold a school event where young people will hear from a local Stolen Generations survivor. There will be a screening of the film ‘Rabbit Proof 2 Fence’, a barbecue and some smaller activities like painting and storytelling. In the lead up to the event, students will create a design around the 2014 theme to be printed onto baseball caps.

In Bamaga, NPA Family and Community Services will hold an afternoon for locals to come together and talk about their experiences of displacement. Participants will be involved in printing t-shirts with the theme on it, there will be a screening of the national Apology and an ‘open mike’ session to talk about the significance of the Apology. A special slide presentation will be provided to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the forced removals of Aboriginal people from Old Mapoon.
